Cognac Cognac is not just a drink – it is an expression of time, patience and tradition. In the small region in southwest France, between Bordeaux and the Atlantic, some of the world's most refined spirits are created. Here, wine is distilled into noble grape brandy according to strict rules and ancient methods, before it is slowly matured in oak barrels – often for decades. At Vinreisen, we take you to the heart of Cognac production: to family-run houses and cellars that ooze history. You'll experience how climate, soil and barrel aging shape the character – from fresh, floral VSOP to deep, complex XO. We learn how to taste cognac like a wine: look at the color, breathe in the aromas of dried fruit, leather and vanilla, and let the taste fill your mouth with warmth and elegance. And as always on the Wine Journey, we combine knowledge with experience – preferably a glass in your hand, good food on the table and good stories around it. Burgundy Burgundy is the very heart of French wine tradition – a patchwork of vineyards, villages and family-run domains that have perfected the art of expressing soil through wine. Here it’s all about terroir – the interaction between soil, climate and people – and nowhere else in the world do the vineyards tell their stories with such nuance. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars of this classic wine landscape. From the elegant reds of Côte de Nuits to the mineral whites of Meursault and Chablis, Burgundy shows that greatness often lies in simplicity. Every village, every hillside and every vineyard has its own character, and the wines reflect this with precision and finesse. At Vinreisen, we convey the soul of Burgundy through taste and place. We visit producers who will let you know the difference between Premier Cru and Grand Cru, and we combine the tastings with local gastronomy – creamy cheese, truffles and classic dishes from the Burgundy kitchen. It is a journey in taste, craftsmanship and history – for those who seek the genuine and timeless. Sicily Sicily is the treasure trove of the Mediterranean – an island where vines grow among olive trees, lemon groves and volcanic hillsides. Here tradition and renewal meet in a landscape that oozes life and character. The island’s winemaking tradition dates back thousands of years, but today’s Sicily is more vibrant than ever – a place where young winemakers are breathing new life into old vineyards and forgotten grape varieties. The black, mineral-rich soil around Etna produces some of Italy's most exciting wines - elegant, pure and with a freshness that surprises. Grapes like Nerello Mascalese and Carricante tell the story of heights, lava and sea breezes. Further south, we find powerful, sun-ripened Nero d'Avola wines and aromatic whites with hints of citrus, herbs and salty sea air. At Vinreisen, we let Sicily show its diversity – from modern wine cellars in the mountainsides to small, family-run farms where everything is still done by hand. We taste the wines where they belong – under the open sky, with local dishes, seafood and true Sicilian hospitality. This is a journey to the heart of the Mediterranean – where the sun never stops shining, and the wine always tastes of the place it comes from. Bubbles in the blood Champagne has its very own place with us – and it gets the place it deserves. But the world of sparkling wine is far bigger, more varied and full of surprises. From Spain to Italy and into Austria and England, we find winemakers creating bubbles with as much craftsmanship, pride and personality as Champagne – often at a far more accessible price. In Catalonia, Cava is made from classic grapes such as Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel·lo. The method is the same as in Champagne – metodo tradicional – with a second fermentation in the bottle. The result is wines with freshness, nuttiness and an elegant mousse, perfect for tapas, seafood or a warm summer evening in Barcelona. In Italy we find Prosecco, the happy, light and fruity bubbly from Veneto. Here the Glera grape is used, and the wine gets its sparkling character through the Charmat method, where the bubbles are formed in large tanks before bottling. Prosecco is about the joy of life – about laughter, snacks and aperitivo in the sun. Further south in Sicily and southern Italy, we find an increasing number of producers making metodo classico wines from local grapes – often on par with small Champagne houses, but with a southern expression. In Franciacorta in Lombardy, the Italians take bubbles very seriously: here, complex, aged sparkling wines are made using the same method as in Champagne, but with Italian warmth and fullness. And then there’s Crémant – France’s elegant alternative, produced in regions like Alsace, Burgundy and Loire. Here you’ll find everything from fresh, floral varieties to ripe, mineral wines – always made using the traditional method, but with grapes and terroir that give it its own distinct character. At Vinreisen, we look beyond Champagne and explore these sparkling regions – where craftsmanship, climate and culture meet in the glass. From the chalky cellars of cava to the sunny hills of prosecco, from the sophisticated wine cellars of Franciacorta to the cool chalk landscapes of England – we find the stories behind the bubbles, the people who make them, and the moments that make them special. Where should you stay and what should we experience? Can you cycle? A trip to Europe’s bubbly regions isn’t just about wine – it’s about lifestyle, landscape and culture. Whether you’re in the sunny hills of Prosecco, the elegant wine regions of Franciacorta or the green valleys of Catalonia, you’ll find small family-run hotels and wineries that welcome you with warmth and charm. In many places, you can stay in the middle of the vineyards, wake up to views of rows of grapes and start your day with a local breakfast on the terrace. Experiences range from guided tastings and cellar visits to cooking classes, picnics in the vineyards and leisurely bike rides between villages. Several of the regions – such as Prosecco and Loire – have well-marked bike routes that allow you to experience nature, wine and culture at your own pace. It is possible to combine visits to wineries with short stops in local villages, lunch at a trattoria and perhaps a swim in a lake along the way. With Vinreisen, we make it possible for you to experience the best of both worlds – the bubbles in the glass, and the freedom on two wheels. Packing list It's amazing how much you can fit in a small suitcase or bag. As long as you pack wisely and plan well. The weather can be very variable, especially in the spring. Summer (July and August) can be very hot. Here are some tips for things to keep in mind when going on a wine tour . A bit depending on your travel style and where you're going, of course. Klassifikasjoner: DOCG – Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita Den høyeste vinstatusen i Italia. Strenge regler for produksjonsområde, druer, avkastning, modning, lagring, alkoholnivå og sensorisk godkjenning. Piemonte har 18 DOCG-viner, inkludert: Barolo DOCG Barbaresco DOCG Asti DOCG Roero DOCG DOC – Denominazione di Origine Controllata Også regulert og geografisk beskyttet, men med noe mindre strenge regler enn DOCG. IGT – Indicazione Geografica Tipica Brukes sjeldnere i Piemonte, men tillater mer frihet i druevalg og stil. 🍇 Viktige druesorter i Piemonte Røde druer: 1. Nebbiolo Den mest ikoniske druen i Piemonte. 2. Barbera Mest plantede druen i regionen. 🍄 The truffle: Piedmont's "white gold" The truffle – and especially the white truffle from Piedmont – is a culinary icon, a treasure from nature that carries both mystery and prestige: What is a truffle? Truffles are a type of underground fungus that grows in symbiosis with the roots of specific trees, such as oak, hazel and poplar. They come in several varieties, but the white truffle from Alba (Tuber magnatum Pico) is the rarest and most sought after in the world. 📍 Where does it come from? Piedmont, particularly the areas around Alba, Langhe, Roero and Monferrato, is home to the world's most famous white truffle. The region has perfect conditions: calcareous soil, oak trees and a humid, forested terrain. 🕰️ Season The white truffle is in season from October to December. Then the iconic International White Truffle Festival is held in Alba, where gourmets, chefs and truffle traders from all over the world gather. 💎 Why is white truffle so special? Intense aroma: earthy, garlicky, musky, with hints of parmesan and gas (in a good way!). You can smell it before you see it. Cannot be cultivated: Unlike black truffles, white truffles have not been successfully cultivated commercially – they must be found in the wild. Hunting with dogs: Trained truffle dogs (trifolao) search for truffles in the forest. It is a traditional practice that is often passed down through generations. Price: A large white truffle can cost several thousand euros – it is often more expensive than gold per gram! 🍽 How is the truffle used? It is eaten raw, thinly sliced over hot dishes such as: Homemade tajarin (Piedmontese egg pasta) Risotto Eggs (e.g. poached or fried) A simple dish with butter and parmesan is enough – the truffle takes center stage. The heat from the dish releases the scent – truffles are more about aroma than taste. 🌿 The importance of the truffle in Piedmont It is a symbol of luxury, but also of down-to-earth tradition – a bridge between peasant culture and gastronomic greatness. The Piedmontese have a strong relationship with truffles: it's about nature, respect and patience. Many local families make a living partly from truffle hunting and selling in season – and the knowledge of hunting, storing and evaluating is part of the region's heritage. Where should you stay and what should we experience? Can you cycle? If Langhe is your main destination and you want to visit both Barbaresco and Barolo (preferably on two different days), we recommend staying overnight in Alba. This makes logistics easier – especially for those who want to cycle between the vineyards. For those who want to delve a little deeper into an area and want to stay overnight in a vineyard, we have many great places to recommend. We collaborate with selected accommodations and know where to stay and eat. We know the region well and offer guided tours both by bike and by minibus. We facilitate leisurely cycling on quiet roads through the vineyards, an experience that requires local knowledge and planning. Our selected routes are like cycling through postcards. For those who prefer transportation by car or bus, we offer flexible packages from small groups to larger tours. Alba is only two hours from Milan Malpensa, and with three full days we also recommend setting aside one for Roero – the wine region on the other side of the Tanaro River. We have formal wine education (sommelier and WSET) and emphasize imparting both wine knowledge and the history of the region. If you want to venture a little off the beaten track, we can also include less visited wine regions – or a relaxing end at Lago Maggiore, which is only half an hour from the airport. We know Piedmont after many years of experience and help you find the solutions that suit you best – whether you want to experience the most during a long weekend or just enjoy good days with good wine, food and beautiful nature. Packing list It's amazing how much you can fit in a small suitcase or bag. As long as you pack wisely and plan well. The weather can be very variable, especially in spring. Summer (July and August) can be very hot. Here are some tips for things to keep in mind when going to Piedmont. A bit dependent on your travel style, of course. Here is the list: 1. Thin wool sweater (for cycling) 2. Waterproof and waterproof jacket (and pants) 3. Good shoes (gore tex - muddy in wet vineyards) 4. A small bag with a water bottle and extra clothes 5. Sunscreen & sunglasses 6. Power bank (beautiful scenery = lots of photos) 7. Extra shift for dinner in the evening 8. Light, bright clothes for warm days 9. Warm clothes for spring and autumn 10. A sun hat/cap may be a good idea in the middle of the day Do you want more information about Piedmont? Contact us and we will guide you through the region and tailor it to your wishes.
